How is my client's deposit calculated?
The deposit uses the low end of the time estimate and your hourly rate, within minimum and maximum limits. The calculation runs on our servers.
The deposit is a portion of the low end of the project's time estimate, multiplied by your stated hourly rate and kept within a minimum and maximum amount. The entire calculation runs on the server, never on the client's device.
This calculation only applies to clients Tattooed brings you through the assignment process. A booking made through your public booking page and a session you add to your calendar yourself do not trigger an automatic deposit. If you send one of these clients a quote with a deposit, the deposit is calculated from the price in your quote, not your hourly rate, and no commission is deducted. See [What is the difference between a client brought by Tattooed and a client who is already yours?](/en/help/artist/requests-and-assignment/referred-vs-direct-clients).
Where the amount comes from
When a client approves their design, Tattooed automatically estimates a time range for the tattoo based on the body area and stated size. The low end of this range is used as the reference. It is multiplied by your hourly rate to produce a reference amount, a fixed portion of which becomes the deposit, always within the minimum and maximum set by the platform.
If you have not stated an hourly rate on your profile, a reference rate set by Tattooed is used instead. This is another reason to add your own. Without it, the deposit collected for your appointments does not reflect your actual pricing.
What Tattooed deducts
Tattooed keeps a commission from each deposit at a rate set by the platform. This commission also covers the share paid to any affiliate partner who brought in the client. When this additional deduction applies, it comes from Tattooed's commission, never from your share. You therefore receive the same amount whether or not the client came through an affiliate.
The amount never comes from the client
The server recalculates the payment amount requested at booking on every payment attempt, using your project and hourly rate as recorded at that time. Changing an amount in the mobile app would have no effect. It would simply be ignored in favor of the server calculation.
What the deposit protects
The deposit belongs to the professional if the client fails to attend the appointment without a valid reason. It counts toward the final price of the service, and the remaining balance is paid at the studio under your usual terms. For legal details on what the law says about deposits for tattoos, see the blog post Deposits or down payments: what the law says (in French).
Changing your hourly rate
Changing your hourly rate from /pro only affects future appointments. An appointment that has already been offered or confirmed keeps the amount calculated when it was assigned.
