Why we did this
He apologized. It wasn’t his place to apologize.
He didn’t touch his phone the whole session. A tattoo artist doesn’t: the phone stays face down on the table. But at the break he picked it back up, and ate his sandwich with one hand: about ten messages. Some “what would this look like in black and grey?”, some screenshots, some from people who’ll never write back. He sighed, put the phone down, put his gloves back on. And he apologized for taking five minutes.
This guy spent years learning to do what he does. Years of drawing, of training, of skin that doesn’t forgive guesswork. And he spends his evenings typing “it depends on the size, can you send me a photo?” to people he’ll never meet. He doesn’t complain about it. He thinks it comes with the job.
Then there are the days he blocked off for someone who never showed. The slot you can’t fill the night before for the next day. The design he drew three times that ends up with someone else. Nobody sees that work, and nobody pays for it.
Every trade eventually got its own tool — the hairdresser, the physio, the corner restaurant. He runs his studio, his waiting list and his bookkeeping out of his social media. Not because it’s good. Because no one built him anything else.
As for us, we’re two tattooed entrepreneurs. We each saw this scene play out on our own, and we knew how to build the tool that was missing.
You, in all this, are on the other end of those messages. We just made sure your request reaches him differently — for him, and so, for you.
Today, he doesn’t have to apologize anymore. He just has to tattoo.

What people ask us
Does it work in my city?
Everywhere in France. Tattooed doesn’t roll out city by city: tattoo artists sign up wherever they work, and assignment is based on actual distance, not a list of covered cities. So what matters isn’t your city, but the number of tattoo artists registered near you — the app tells you before you commit to anything.
Is the preview really what I’ll get?
No, and we don’t claim it is. It’s a projection calculated on your photo: it gives the scale, placement and look of the design. The final line work is the tattoo artist’s hand, on your skin, with their own constraints.
How many previews can I generate?
Several, at no cost. The quota belongs to your phone, not to your project: it refills on its own over a rolling window, and the app always shows you how many you have left and when it refills. A preview that fails on our end is never counted.
Who are the tattoo artists?
Professionals who’ve opened a space on Tattooed and have their identity and bank details verified by our payment provider. Until that verification is done, no deposit is paid out to them.
What happens to my photos?
A photo of skin is sensitive data, and it’s treated as such: stored outside any publicly accessible area, accessed through time-limited signed links, GPS metadata stripped on upload, never a public address. They’re used to generate your preview and prepare your session, nothing else.
What if I change my mind about the design?
Nothing is set in stone. Until you approve it, you can keep adjusting. Once approved, that’s the design that goes to the tattoo artist as a stencil — but it’s reviewed with them: it’s a professional who judges what holds up on your skin, and the drawing is adjusted with them before the session.
How much does the tattoo cost, in total?
The tattoo artist sets their hourly rate, and only them. The app estimates your session length from the design you approved, then shows you the assigned artist’s rate and the deposit amount before you confirm anything. So you know the ballpark before paying, and the deposit paid is deducted from the balance settled on site.
Do I risk paying for nothing?
No. Before the deposit, nothing is committed: you can preview, adjust or abandon a project without being asked for any amount. And if your tattoo artist declines the project, or it isn’t workable as is, we offer you another tattoo artist and your deposit carries over to the new appointment; if no other session happens, you’re refunded in full. It’s spelled out in the app, at the moment you pay.
